U Thu Wai (Chairman)

U Thu Wai is a politician of Union of Myanmar (former name Burma). Since a student he had been engaged in various political activities. One of his most remembered job was as a personnel secretary to Deputy Prime Minister of Myanmar (former name Burma) U Kyaw Nyien from 1957 to 1964. He had been a political prisoner of conscience for over 10 years after the now famous 8888 uprising. He founded Democratic Party (Myanmar), DPM, in the year 2010 and is its current chairman. His party (DPM) will contest in the upcoming multi party general election, scheduled to be held in the end of year 2010.

Biography

He was born in 31st December 1932 in the town of Toungoo, Union of Myanmar (Burma) to parents U Ba Ohn and Daw Hla Tin. He is a holder of Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree from Rangoon University. In 1968 he married Daw Mya Than , daughter of U Yone. They have 2 sons and 1 daughter.

He is a veteran attendee of various international conferences and meetings held in Thailand, Ceylon, Egypt, Israel, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, England etc.

Recent Activities (Aftermath of the now famous 8888 uprising-1988)

He formed a political party named Democray Party in 1989 and was the Chairman of this party. He participated in the 1990 multi party general election. This party was formed in association other prominent politicians such as Bo Hmu Aung, Bo Taught Htein, U Tin Oo etc.

He was also CEC member of the League of Democracy and Peace headed by ex Prime Minister U Nu and ex President Mann Win Maung. Some of the prominent members of this League are U Aung Swe, U Tin Oo, U Saw Myint and Thakin Chit Maung.

Current Activities (2010)

After 20 years of military rule, Myanmar’s State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) decided to hold a multi party general election at the end of year 2010.

He had formed a political party named “Democratic Party (Myanmar)” and will contest in the upcoming general election. He is the current chairman of this party.

Democratic Party (Myanmar) was formed in association with sons and daughters of Myanmar’s past democratically elected governments. They are Daw Than Than Nu (daughter of ex Prime Minister U Nu), Daw Nay Yee Ba Swe and Nay Phoo Ba Swe (daughter and son of ex Prime Minister U Ba Swe), Daw Cho Cho Kyaw Nyien (daughter of ex Deputy Prime Minister U Kyaw Nyien).

The main objective of Democratic Party (Myanmar) is “To create a decent life as human beings for the people of Myanmar”.
