About my life
I was born to U Ba Swe and Daw Nu Nu Swe on 26-01-1952.
My father was a prominent politician of Myanmar. He fought along side General Aung San and other patriots for Burma’s independence participating in numerous legal and underground activities. He had been a Prime Minister (1956-57), Defense Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Mines etc, when multi-party democracy thrives in Myanmar. He was also the President of Trade Union Congress, Burma (acronym – TUCB) of Myanmar.
My Political and Social Activities
I have been interested in religious affairs and humanitarian causes and I willingly hand out helping hand in cash or kind whenever opportunities arise. I like to study and practice Dhamma (Buddhism).
I played an active role in the 1974 anti-government demonstrations protesting the dishonorable way government handled the funeral of United Nation’s Secretary General U Thant.
While working as an auditor in the Central Account Office (a government employee), I got involved in the workers and student uprising and was detained on June 11th 1975.
As a result I was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment by a Military Court and served the term in the infamous Insein Prison. I was also dismissed from the Central Account Office.
From 1962 to 1990 six members of my family also served various prison terms under the Anti Government Political Act.
After I got out of prison I worked in one of the embassies in Myanmar for about 4 years for my living.
In 1988 I resigned from that post in order to participate in the now famous 8888 uprising (a nation wide spontaneous uprising) resulting in the fall of Socialist Government that was ruling Myanmar at that time.
The current Military Government took over Myanmar after that. They also held a multi-party election just after taking over (in 1990).
I contested in this 1990 multi-party general election from Sangaung, Yangon constituency under the A.F.P.F.L Original Organization.
From 1992 to 2005 I worked in various capacities in some Myanmar joint ventures companies and projects. At present I hold a post as Secretary in Democratic Party (Myanmar).
About My Party
Democratic Party (Myanmar), acronym (DPM), strives for change through peaceful means for an improvement in the country’s present situation and to pave a path to a new beginning for the future generations.
DPM objective is to re-establish country’s prosperity, basic human rights, equality, freedom and security. In order to realize this objective we need to establish a creditable democratic system first.
I believed that rather than remain trapped in the past, we must move forward on the basic of mutual understanding, respect and trust.
- Should we stand still and stay put at the present zero level of
expectations, our future prospects will remain at zero. - Should we go downhill from zero level, we will only get negative results.
- We should strive forward and march uphill from zero level.
- I believed that our prospects are bound to improve and to get us nearer to our democratic goal we must contest in the 2010 multi-party general election.
My slogans are:-
- We shall grab whatever opportunity that may arise as a step towards achieving our goal.
- Even if there is just half a chance of achieving our goal, we must grab that half-chance with both hands.
- Let us strive and march towards our democratic goal.
